Spring Break and DUI-related Accidents: Information for Residents
Tourists are great for Florida’s economy, but there are some downsides to hosting partygoers at spring break. Beyond the activities at our beaches and other attractions, local residents should keep an eye out for inexperienced and impaired drivers. In 2012 there were nearly 700 fatalities due to DUI-related vehicle accidents. Although many organizations warn residents and tourists of the dangers of drinking and driving, people continue to drink and drive.
Spring break often focuses on the beach, parties and drinking. It is important even for sober drivers to keep an eye out for drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol. These drivers may not be aware of Florida’s traffic laws, speed limits or blood alcohol limits.
Focus on youth
The recent media attention forced on tourist and pop star Justin Bieber’s Florida-DUI charges has brought the spotlight on youth drinking and driving. Bieber was 19 years old when he was arrested in Miami. This increase in negative publicity may have a positive result by reminding young drivers that anyone can get arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Of the 3,412 fatal car accidents in 2012, just fewer than 300 included a driver under 21 years old.
Accident claims and DUI
If an intoxicated driver causes a car crash that hurts you, you have the right to sue for damages in civil court.
