Florida Jury Awards $603 Million After Counterfeit Airbag Kills Young Mother

AirbagFail

Airbags are supposed to save lives in the event of an accident. However, in one incident that occurred in Florida, a reportedly fake airbag led to a fatal accident that would otherwise have had no such lethality.

The family of a 22-year-old who was killed following an accident caused by an airbag supplied by the Chinese company Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd (DTN), received a $603 million award from a jury in June 2026. This incident clearly shows that a traffic accident can lead to other types of legal actions, such as product liability claims.

Counterfeit airbag turns deadly

According to the lawsuit, the decedent was operating a 2020 Chevy Malibu in June 2023 and got into a collision with another vehicle. The crash would not have been fatal, but because of the faulty airbag, metal pieces got into the car and fatally injured its driver.

The airbags in this car had been used earlier due to another collision, and after the repair work, the fake DTN airbag was installed prior to purchase. The decedent didn’t have any idea about the replacement airbag in her car.

DTN denied the allegations in their court papers but skipped the June trial in which the verdict of $603 million was given to the family of the decedent.

Federal regulators warn about defective replacement airbags

Defective airbags are more than just isolated incidents. After deaths and injuries due to DTN replacement airbag inflators, the NHTSA launched an investigation into the case. In April 2026, the NHTSA issued an order to ban the sale and distribution of some defective Chinese airbags that can be deadly for drivers and passengers because they can explode during car accidents, sending metal shrapnel into the driver’s face.

It was reported by NHTSA that 10 people were killed and three suffered serious injuries after 13 crashes involving cars with faulty DTN60DB airbags.

Who is liable when a replacement part is defective?

Some folks might believe that the only person liable in a car accident is the one who caused the accident. However, you can file product liability lawsuits against manufacturers who produce defective and dangerous products. These claims tend to be far more complex.

Under certain circumstances, claims may be brought against any number of companies that have had a part in putting a defective product into a vehicle.

What should Florida used-car drivers know?

The NHTSA advises consumers purchasing second-hand cars to check the car’s history, especially if airbags were deployed during an accident. Cars with salvage or reconstructed title status may need more consideration.

Consumers should consider having the potentially compromised car checked out by a trained dealership. Individuals should not test the airbag, as it may accidentally activate and cause serious harm.

In the aforementioned case, there is a key point that Florida accident victims should know: There is always more to the story than the accident itself. When a defective part makes the accident more harmful, checking the car can determine who is liable for the accident.
